ABC’s Katie has an interesting guest this afternoon that hits close to home. It’s Miss America contestant Allyn Rose, who’s repping D.C. in the upcoming pageant. Rose, a resident of Newburg, Md., is igniting controversy over her decision to have a preventive double mastectomy and the backlash has apparently been rough.
“WHEN THEY SAY THOSE HURTFUL THINGS, I DON’T HAVE A MOM TO CALL,” she says. “I DON’T HAVE A MOM TO TELL ME THAT…I’M DOING THE RIGHT THING. I HAD TO DO THAT FOR MYSELF.”
Her reasoning for the surgery? She lost her mother to breast cancer when she was 16.
The program airs at 3 p.m. ET today.
