It's Official: Martin To ABC

We reported yesterday on Rachel Martin's move from NPR to ABC and today the network made it official. NPR's internal staff notice from Sharon Hoffman, obtained by FishbowlDC: Today, ABC News will announce that the extraordinarily talented Rachel Martin will be joining its DC bureau as a correspondent. She will start there July 9th. Rachel's last day on Bryant Park will be June 27th. Host Alison Stewart returns from maternity leave July 18th. In the interim, Mark Garrison continues as the show's newscaster, a position he's been ably filling for the last six weeks. He joins Mike Pesca, who's been one of our regular substitute hosts since BPP's premiere. Mike has brought the show lots of personality along with his considerable intelligence, and surely some of the most creative segment opens ever. Many, many thanks to both Mark and Mike for their continuing dedication and hard work. ... While we have a few weeks to recognize Rachel appropriately for her contributions to NPR over the years, I want to take a minute and thank her now publicly for her critical role in launching Bryant Park. She's put in countless early-morning hours reporting each day's news with authority and style. She has co-hosted the show full time since February, and her interviews are always thoughtful and insightful. She lights up that studio with her charm. It was no surprise to me when ABC first approached her months ago; they know talent when they see it. But Rachel's a team player, and she was stand-up enough to delay her departure as long as she could to help carry us through Alison's maternity leave. She's a friend, and I'm terribly sad to see her go, but I'm delighted she's been offered such a great opportunity and I can't wait to watch her shine. And the internal staff notice from ABC's David Westin: I am pleased to announce that Rachel Martin will join ABC News as a correspondent based in our Washington, D.C. bureau starting in early July. Rachel comes to us from NPR, where she is the newscaster for The Bryant Park Project. She has extensive reporting experience abroad and at home, having covered both national and international stories including the London terror attacks, the federal elections in Germany, U.S. military operations in Iraq, women's issues in Afghanistan, and Afghanistan's first democratic presidential election. She was also one of the first reporters on the ground in Blacksburg, VA to cover last year's Virginia Tech massacre. Her work has been featured on NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Day to Day, and Weekend Edition Sunday. Her wide range of experience will be a tremendous asset to the news division and we look forward to adding her to our reporting team in Washington. Please join me in welcoming Rachel.
