In Memoriam: Walter Cronkite 1916-2009

“The most trusted man in America,” Walter Cronkite died this evening at the age of 92, his family and CBS News announced. The legendary journalist anchored the CBS Evening News for nearly 20 years and was the reporter for which the term “anchorman” was coined. He had been suffering from cerebrovascular disease.

Americans associate Cronkite with some of the biggest stories of the 20th century, including the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, man’s first landing on the moon and the Vietnam War.

President of CBS News and Sports Sean McManus released this statement tonight: “It is impossible to imagine CBS News, journalism or indeed America without Walter Cronkite.
