In Memoriam: Bill Grant

From the Post's internal announcement: It is with great sadness that we report that Bill Grant, washingtonpost.com's sports editor, passed away this morning at Georgetown University Medical Center after a six-month battle with cancer. He was 53. Our sympathies go to Tracy, and the couple's 11-year-old twin sons, Andrew and Christopher. Tracy, the editor of KidsPost, and Bill have been dynamic and popular presences at the newspaper and website, and the tragedy of his death strikes their friends and colleagues in both our newsrooms. Bill was diagnosed with cancer last August, and despite grueling treatment, he remained devoted to running our daily sports coverage online, especially on Redskins game days. The pride he'd always had in putting out a well-edited and deep sports section never changed, and he handled his illness -- and the questions about it -- with incredible grace. Bill was hired at washingtonpost.com in October 1996 as a part-time copy editor in sports, and he quickly made himself indispensable to what was a pretty green newsroom. He soon was brought on full time, and his relentless quest to make sure we were putting out a terrific sports section every day made him the obvious choice to take over as sports editor when that position opened up in 1997. Since then, sports has become one of the most popular areas of the site, adding all sorts of new innovations. Bill was the first section editor to build out comprehensive special reports, starting with the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano. This "special report" model has been used across the site since. He's also wrote what may have been the first "blog" on washingtonpost.com in 2002, when he wrote his "Snippets" column from the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City. These efforts were typical of Bill's willingness to try all sorts of new ways to present journalism in this new medium. More importantly, Bill was a friend and mentor to the sports staff.
