From the release: Reporting Workshop for Covering Homeland Security May 21-23, 2007 The International Reporting Project (IRP) of the Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) is pleased to announce it will conduct a special, one-time workshop in Washington, D.C., for journalists from around the country who cover homeland security issues. The workshop will be held May 21-23, 2007, and will provide 15 journalists with roundtrip airfare to Washington and hotel accommodations while taking part in the program, which is called "*Covering Homeland Security: Does the System Work to Stop Terror?* Applications are now available for all U.S. journalists for this unique program, which will provide exclusive meetings with top officials from agencies such as the CIA, FBI, Department of Homeland Security, members of Congress and their staff, scholars, private experts and Washington-based journalists who regularly cover intelligence and homeland security issues. *This is an exciting chance for reporters around the country who cover security, defense, intelligence and post 9/11 homeland security issues in their communities,* said John Schidlovsky, director of the International Reporting Project. The workshop is organized by IRP and will take place in Washington, D.C., at the IRP*s base at SAIS. Support for the workshop comes from the McCormick Tribune Foundation, which sponsors Specialized Reporting Institutes that are designed to provide journalists with practical reporting training. From May 21-23, journalists selected for the workshop will gather to examine how well the federal agencies responsible for homeland security have responded to terrorist threats. The Specialized Reporting Institute will look closely at how the various agencies such as the CIA and FBI and others interact. The workshop will also train journalists how to cover homeland security issues in their local and regional communities, in areas such as transportation, energy and law enforcement. WHO SHOULD APPLY: Mid-career journalists who are U.S. citizens and have at least three years* professional experience. Applicants must regularly report on issues such as homeland security, military affairs and defense issues, transportation, criminal justice or law enforcement. Journalists from mid-sized markets outside the Washington, D.C., area are encouraged to apply. The program is open to journalists from newspapers, magazines, wire services, radio, television and online news organizations; freelancers may also apply.
