Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, on CBS's "Face the Nation" with guest host Charlie Rose: "Well, first of all, the most important thing, to protect the American people. And as you said, you've got to base your decision and your policy on scientific evidence and scientific principles. Talking about health care workers coming back, they are at different levels of risk depending on their experience." "And you tailor the kinds of monitoring, passively, actively, direct, according to that kind of risk. The idea of a blanket quarantine for people who come back could possibly have a negative consequence of essentially disincentivizing people from wanting to go there. And the reason that's important, Charlie, is because the best way to protect Americans is to stop the epidemic in Africa. And we need those health care workers to do that. So to put them in a position when they come back that no matter what, automatically they're under quarantine can actually have unintended consequences. And that's the reason why we're concerned about that." Fauci on ABC's "This Week" with guest host Martha Raddatz: "One, we need to protect the American public, but two, we need to make the decisions based on scientific data. And we know that people who are without symptoms are not a threat to transmitting it. You don’t get Ebola unless you come into direct contact with body fluid. So there are things that we have got to be careful." Fauci on NBC's "Meet the Press" "The best way to stop this epidemic is to help the people in West Africa. We do that by sending people over there. Not only from the USA, but from other places. We need to treat them, returning people, with respect, and make sure that -- they're really heroes. So the idea that we're being a little bit draconian, there are other ways to protect. There's monitoring, there's direct monitoring, there's active monitoring. We don't necessarily need to do that." Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ)’s return to the Sunday shows on "FOX News Sunday" "Well, listen, I have great respect for Dr. Fauci. But what he's counting on is voluntary system with folks who may or may not comply. We had the situation in New Jersey, Chris, as you know, with NBC News crew that said that they were going to self-quarantine and then two days later they were picking up takeout in Princeton and walking a around the streets of Princeton." "I mean, the fact of the matter is that we -- I don't believe when you're dealing with something as serious as this that we can count on a voluntary system. This is government's job. If anything else, the government job is to protect safety and health of our citizens. And so, we've taken this action and I absolutely have no second thoughts about it." Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) on CNN's "State of the Union" on using intelligence to protect national security: "The only defense is intelligence. And that is that you have to ferret it out. You have to be able to watch it and you have to be able to disrupt them. Now, this is hard to do, because it takes technical means and Americans don't necessarily like technical means.”
