Garcia-Ruiz Gets Fancy New Title at <em>WaPo</em>

Emilio Garcia-Ruiz, WaPo's Sports editor turned Metro (a.k.a. Local) editor 17 months ago, will no longer lead the Metro team. According to an internal memo obtained by FishbowlDC, Garcia-Ruiz is being moved into a seemingly-fancy and "important new role" as Editor for Strategic Projects. We're not sure if the shift is actually a promotion but the Post has not yet named his replacement. According to the email, management plans to look both internally and externally to fill the vacant editor seat. The new job description is outlined in the memo after the jump. We are delighted to announce that Emilio Garcia-Ruiz will take on a new role as Editor for Strategic Projects. As Local Editor and before that as Sports Editor, Emilio led a number of important digital efforts for the newsroom. In this new role, he will be able to fully dedicate his enormous talents and intelligence to innovation and take on a newsroom-wide role in driving new digital projects, along with his ongoing portfolio of digital initiatives. Reporting to Raju Narisetti and working closely with the business-side team led by Ken Babby, Emilio will have a range of responsibilities. He will: · lead newsroom strategy and product development on mobile, working closely with Mobile General Manager Beth Jacobs and others in the newsroom involved in ongoing mobile initiatives; · be the point person for newsroom digital technology initiatives, working with the newsroom digital design team led by Justin Ferrell, the News IT team led by Claudia Townsend, and the company IT group led by Roger Andelin; · represent the Newsroom in the Intake process that steers our company-wide technology efforts; · serve as newsroom liaison with the Digital Products group, working closely with Beth Howe and Tim Condon in generating new initiatives; · help to lead our team of Innovation Editors, who work for various editors in the newsroom, in driving common digital initiatives across the newsroom; · help lead a new effort to establish best practices in database creation, management and usage in the newsroom, working closely with News Research, relevant Innovation Editors, Graphics, Design and others involved in that work; · work closely with the business side on Email and Newsletter business initiatives. This may sound like a lot, but of course it’s Emilio we’re talking about here, and those who have worked with him know how capable and effective he is. Over the last 17 months as Local editor, he has overseen the refashioning of our local reporting teams and with his team of coverage editors guided some of the paper’s most memorable journalism-- coverage of last winter’s snowstorms, the fatal 2009 Metrorail crash and subsequent accountability reporting, the dynamic D.C. Democratic primary, and many in-depth crime and investigative pieces. Before becoming Local Editor, Emilio served as Sports Editor, running a staff that is widely recognized for its excellence. This is Emilio’s second stint at the paper, having returned in June 2001 to serve as deputy sports editor. Emilio has also worked at the Orange County Register, the Los Angeles Times and the St. Paul Pioneer Press. We plan to look at both internal and external candidates to lead our Local team.
