David Martosko, senior strategist and director of research for the public affairs firm Berman and Company, will be the new Executive Editor of The Daily Caller. Megan Mulligan, who formerly held the position, resigned in May to move to Tunisia. Martosko begins his new job this week. As you’ll see below, he’s got the Social Media world covered as well as a few other things, like a rap sheet.
Daily Caller Editor-in-Chief Tucker Carlson defends his new hire wholeheartedly. “Yes, I knew about it,” said Carlson when I emailed him over the laundry list of legal troubles Martosko has faced. “In fact it’s one of the reasons I hired him. People who’ve been shamed in public tend to know themselves better, something I learned on Dancing with the Stars. David’s not the only person in this office who’s been arrested, by the way, and I’ve made it clear to the staff that anyone who judges him for it can leave. Nobody has. Incidentally, David, like me, doesn’t drink any more. So we’ve got that in common.”
Even with the backing, things may get a little more colorful over at The Daily Caller with Martosko on board. For one thing, the guy can sing. He originally wanted a career in the arts and graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1995 with a Master’s Degree in Music from the Peabody Conservatory. Before that, he graduated from Dartmouth, where he studied physics and engineering. While there, he led Dodecaphonics, an a cappella group. He was also — get this — student conductor of the Glee Club.
Moving on to Martosko’s rap sheet. Among other things, in separate incidents he was arrested for DWI in 2008, and in 2010, another arrest for trespassing on school/church property, an incident described as public swearing/intoxication. In the case of the DWI, he was found guilty. He received a continuance for the 2010 incident that was supposed to be resolved in May of 2011.
