From the release: The Society of Professional Journalists announced last week that National Journal is the winner of its 2006 Sigma Delta Chi Award for Public Service in Magazine Journalism for Staff Correspondent Corine Hegland's package of stories on the detainees being held as "enemy combatants" at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The article was published in the February 4, 2006 issue of National Journal. The Sigma Delta Chi Awards recognize the best in professional journalism, covering print, radio, television, newsletters, photography, online and research. The Society of Professional Journalists gives three magazine-specific awards each year, including one for public service. Newsweek, BusinessWeek and Consumer Reports were winners of the public service award in the previous three years. The award citation states, "Hegland's package is an accessible but thoroughly researched examination providing powerful evidence that despite Bush administration assertions, most of the detainees were not captured on a battlefield or were members of Al Qaeda but were instead seized in dragnets in Pakistan in exchange for rewards." It continues, "The National Journal submission stood out in a competitive field of strong contributions, many of which undoubtedly served the public through information and insights. But none had the overarching combination of revelatory reporting and clear, penetrating writing of Heglandâ€™s package." "It's an honor for the magazine to receive this award on behalf of Corine's outstanding work on this package," said Charles Green, National Journal's editor. "Her stories were the first to debunk the myth that the detainees at Guantanamo were 'the worst of the worst' terrorists." The June/July issue of Quill, the magazine published by The Society of Professional Journalists, will have extensive coverage of the award winners. The awards dinner will be held in Washington, D.C. in July.
