C-SPAN to Air Special With FLOTUS at 11 a.m.

Get ready. C-SPAN will air a special live program from the White House with the First Lady today at 11 a.m. ET. The issue? Childhood obesity. The program is part of C-SPAN's StudentCam contest, a national video documentary contest conducted annually for middle and high school students. The first prize middle school winner, Matthew Shimura, will join the First Lady at the White House for the program. His winning StudentCam documentary zoned in on childhood obesity in America. During the program FLOTUS will take calls from students who submitted StudentCam videos about obesity. The event takes place in front of an audience of students from the White House today between 11 a.m. and noon ET. An interesting footnote: Matthew Shimura, who is flying in from Hawaii for this event, attends the Punahou School in Honolulu. It's POTUS's high school alma mater. President Obama attended Punahou School from 1971 to 1979 during his childhood years spent in Hawaii. The contest: The national StudentCam competition, now in its sixth year, invited students to produce a five-to-eight minute documentary focusing on one of our country's strengths or challenges. This year's StudentCam generated a record number of entries. Find out about prizes after the jump... Prizes: Nearly 2,000 students from 45 states and DC submitted 1,003 entries, an 8 percent increase over StudentCam 2009. C-SPAN is awarding 75 student prizes and 11 faculty advisor prizes totaling $50,000, including a Grand Prize winner, two 1st Prize winners, eight 2nd Prize winners, 16 3rd Prize winners, and 48 Honorable Mentions.
