Here’s a nice media rumor to jump start the new year: Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has considered purchasing Scripps Networks Interactive, parent of seven cable channels, including HGTV and The Food Network. According to Business Insider, Mayer initially inquired about buying Food Network, but talks progressed to purchasing all of Scripps.
If Yahoo were to buy Scripps, the price tag would likely be in the $15 billion range. Of course, there’s one big obstacle to Yahoo’s plan: Shareholders would be really mad.
“Lately, many of Yahoo’s largest shareholders have decided that they would like Mayer and Yahoo to find a way to ‘monetize’ those stakes [in Asian companies Alibaba and Yahoo Japan], and return the capital to Yahoo shareholders — instead of spending it on big acquisitions,” reports BI.
