World's Work And Other Names Once Considered for The Wall Street Journal

The New York Times points out that although Rupert Murdoch has pondered changing The Wall Street Journal to simply WSJ, he’s not the first to mull that option.

As recounted in Richard Tofel’s Restless Genius: Barney Kilgore, The Wall Street Journal, and the Invention of Modern Journalism, in 1946, a poll found most people didn’t like the paper’s name, so editors considered a few options.

Some of the new names:

  • The National Journal
  • Financial America
  • World’s Work
  • The North American Journal
  • Business Day

We don’t know about you, but we’re glad Kilgore stuck with The Wall Street Journal.
