WNBC's Bruce Beck Nails Sixth Straight New York Sportscaster of the Year Award

Think of the New York Yankees of the 1940s and 1950, or to a lesser degree the Joe Torre era of the late 1990s. All the teams did was win. Well, Bruce Beck has become a local TV news dynasty. For the sixth consecutive year, the WNBC sports anchor has been selected as the New York State Sportscaster of the Year. Beck shares the honor with SNY/Mets announcer Gary Cohen. There's no truth to the story that the annual award recipient chosen by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association has been renamed the "Beck Award." "Well it's not like winning a Barmash award - that's a goal of mine," Beck jokes. In all seriousness, he says being recognized for the award a half-dozen times in a row is the mark of consistency. "We strive for that in our field -- just like the athletes we cover," Beck tells FishbowlNY. Beck has been the face of sports on Channel 4. This past year, he once again was the station's lead reporter at the London Olympics. While Beck has been at every major sporting event for WNBC, he doesn't have to go far to find his lifeblood. "I love covering the New York sports scene. There is always a game -- always a story," Beck says. "It's compelling and challenging every day. With nine local teams to cover in the four major sports - your heart never stops pumping. I wouldn't want it any other way." Beck also hosts the Sunday night Mike'd Up, the title is a remnant from when Mike Francesa ran the program. It is a great honor to be voted by your peers," Beck tells FishbowlNY. "I have great respect for Gary. He is one of the best play-by-play men in the business." Beck is also a multiple Emmy Award winner, with eight trophies since joining WNBC 15 years ago. He assumed the lead sports anchor role in 2009. Beck will receive the honor at the NSSA banquet in June. Also expected on the dais, sportswriter winners, Mike Vaccaro of the New York Post and Ian O'Connor of ESPNNewYork.com. "Hey, I'd talk more and share more quotes -- but I am chasing a story," Beck says. "Remember, if you read and believe your own press clippings - you're in trouble!"
