WNBC-TV and WCBS-AM Among the Big Winners at Folios

Television and radio personalities were selected for their work. But make no mistake about it, this celebration of the past year had an unofficial theme--The Red Carpet is out for CBS. As we reported last month, WCBS/Channel 2 finalized its takeover of Long Island mainstay Channel 55/WLNY, complete with several hours of new programming using Channel 2 talent. And the Fair Media Council, which oversees the Folios, is ecstatic. The event's printed program opens with this message: "Congratulations, FMC Folio Winners 2012 and Welcome, CBS Long Island." The same sentiment was echoed in the ballroom of the Crest Hollow Country Club, where at the conclusion of the National Anthem, video screens read "Welcome to Long Island, CBS News." The feeling was kept close to the heart of CBS staffers who participated in the awards program. Wayne Cabot presented, alongside his WCBS 880 afternoon partner Steve Scott. Before leaving the podium, Cabot said, "More than ever Long Island is CBS territory," to which Scott concurred. As for the awards, they were hosted by WCBS/Channel 2 anchors Maurice DuBois and Kristine Johnson. WCBS-AM's Mike Xirinachs, Sophia Hall, and the entire news team won a pair of awards. WCBS was honored for the Continuing News Story in a Regularly Scheduled Broadcast, reporting on the Tragedy at Gilgo Beach. In the Spot News category, the station was victorious for its coverage of Hurricane Irene. Sister station 1010 WINS, with reporter Terry Sheridan, also took home a trophy for its work on Hurricane Irene in the Breaking News area. On the TV side, WNBC/Channel 4, and specifically Long Island reporter Greg Cergol and producer/photographer John Albertson, walked away with three awards. Cergol is approaching his 13th year at WNBC. His cohort, Pei-Sze Cheng was a Folio winner as well. Other winners include WABC/Channel 7 veteran reporter Sarah Wallace who received the Robert W. Greene Award for Investigative Journalism in a Regularly Scheduled Newscast. Wallace couldn't attend, but her husband, WNYW/WWOR anchor Harry Martin, was presenting, and accepted on her behalf. WNYW/Channel 5's Barbara Nevins Taylor earned the hardware. WCBS/Channel 2 longtime Long Island correspondent Jennifer McLogan added another Folio to her shelf, while WPIX/Channel 11's Dr. Steve Salvatore was a newcomer to the winner's circle. FiOS 1 News had a two-award showing for Best Enterprise Reporting and Best Feature Story in a Regular Newscast. News 12 Long Island, and reporter Stone Grissom, notched a win. The Long Island Press had a stellar afternoon, collecting ten awards in the Newspaper and Magazine division. Cablevision-owned Newsday was shut out.
