A quiet entry into the area of photo tagging was made over the weekend by none other than Microsoft, as VentureBeat discovered new Windows 8.1 application AutoTag ‘n Search My Photos, which is not available via the Microsoft Research downloads page, or via the Windows Store.
According to VentureBeat, AutoTag ‘n Search My Photos learns the face models of friends users have tagged in Facebook photos and then uses that information to help users tag photos storied in their Windows Picture Library sections.
VentureBeat added that photos taken with Windows Phone devices can be automatically tagged, making them immediately searchable.
Users can also merge Facebook profiles or user-created profiles with tags detected via other photo apps, such as OneDrive, VentureBeat reported, and existing tags will not be overwritten.
VentureBeat had not yet heard back from Microsoft on whether there were any plans to officially release AutoTag ‘n Search My Photos.
