Will Facebook Announce 'Green' Initiative April 7?

Facebook is holding a press event at its headquarters next Thursday, April 7, and the invitation’s design suggests that the announcement could involve energy efficiencies at the company.

The timing of such an announcement makes sense given that Greenpeace has asked Facebook to pledge by April 22, Earth Day, to switch from coal to renewable energy for powering data centers.

Facebook has one data center running in Prineville, Oregon and another is under construction in Rutherford County, North Carolina. The invitation references a “behind-the-scenes” look taking place at company headquarters in Palo Alto, California. So unless this involves video footage or a replica of what goes on in the data centers, the April 7 event could demonstrate how Facebook’s production servers have almost doubled their throughput.

The event might include demos of the Fusion-io hardware that accounts for 75 percent of Facebook’s storage, although that actually operates at the remote data centers. Indeed, a combination of live on-site technology and reproductions of infrastructure in other locations could be part of the agenda.

Readers, what do you think the company will announce on April 7?
