Who’s The Most Powerful World Leader According To Social Media?

OK, if you guessed Barack Obama, you’d be right. But that one’s a given. Take Obama off the list, and who makes the top 5, top 10, and top 25 world leaders according to their social media presence? I bet you’ll be surprised at some of the names on the list.

With over 8,800,000 Twitter followers and more than 21,700,000 likes on Facebook, US President Barack Obama is far and away the number one social media world leader. Obama is so influential, in fact, that he had to be removed from the analysis of the rest of the world leaders as a statistical anomaly.

From Global Post comes an in-depth look at who’s who when it comes to social media clout among the global political elite.

Aside from juggernaut Obama, only one other world leader has more than 1,000,000 followers on Twitter (which is a pretty exclusive club). Otherwise, the other 25 social media leaders are a varied bunch in terms of their Twitter popularity – some have over 500,000 followers, while some aren’t even a member.

So do you think you could name the world leader in second place?

The silver social media medal goes to Philippine President Benigno Aquino III, who has just under 2,100,000 Facebook likes and about half a million Twitter followers. After Aquino comes Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to round out the top three social media world leaders, with only about 140,000 Facebook likes but an impressive 1,630,000 Twitter followers.
