”Good morning, I’m Whoopi Goldberg,” was how the Oscar winner introduced herself to the cheering crowd on her debut of her View gig. Aside from trying to explain — not defend — how Michael Vick’s background may have influenced his terrible choices, Goldberg’s first appearance came off without incident. ABC today also confirmed that there will be a fifth host — the Meredith Vieira replacement — by year’s end. From TheHollywoodReporter:

”’We have a person in mind,’ executive producer Bill Geddie said Tuesday afternoon after the program had wrapped with only one guest, Danny DeVito and the requisite talk by Goldberg, creator/part-time co-host Barbara Walters and co-hosts Joy Behar and Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Geddie said the new co-host could be on the set by the time Hasselbeck takes maternity leave in November.”

Meredith Vieira, who left the show in spring 2006, was rated by Forbes as the 55th most powerful woman in the world.
