What We Mean When We Say Magazine Ad Revenue is Down

In case you’re wondering just how bad it’s gotten for the magazine industry in terms of ad sales Publishers Information Bureau has released its numbers for the first half of 2008. According to their calculations advertising revenue for the first half of 2008 is down 3.1% against the previous year, ad pages during the first quarter down 7.4% and down 8.2% against April through June 2007. So yeah, officially very bad.

So who are the crazy folk still plunking their ad dollar between the glossy pages? Well, according to PIB they belong to the categories of Food & Food Products (in particular beverages, meats, prepared foods, and confectionery spending), Retail, and Public Transportation, Hotels & Resorts.
