WGA Supports Independent Spirit Awards

The Writers Guild of America is giving special dispensation for television writers to work on The Spirit Awards honoring, logically, 2007’s indie films. Rainn Wilson from NBC’s The Office will serve as a writer and Master of Ceremonies for the event. The Spirit Awards will be broadcast live on Saturday, Feb. 23 on the Independent Film Channel. The Academy Awards, viewed by hundreds of millions of viewers, traditionally takes place the day after the Independent Spirits Awards and has not received any similar waiver for writers. In addition, many celebrities are considering boycotting the event altogether rather than crossing the picket line.
