Once again, Tom Beusse, president and CEO of Westwood One, turned to his publishing roots for his no. 2, naming Steven Kalin the radio network’s new executive vp and chief operating officer. Kalin comes to the radio business from Rodale, where he served as COO and was a member of the board.
In his new position, announced Monday (July 14), Kalin will be responsible for all businesses of Westwood one, including its network, traffic and information technology operations. He will also play a lead role in business development and strategic planning.
“Based on his extensive experience and analytic background, Steve will provide us with the operational discipline to execute on the vision we have developed for Westwood One,” said Beusse, to whom Kalin reports. “This discipline will not only provide us with a foundation upon which to evolve our business, but will also enable us to bring newfound rigor to the broader radio community.”
Named in January to head Westwood, Beusse is working to dig out the network from declining revenue and a sinking stock price.
In addition to his track record in traditional media, Kalin also holds experience in digital media, serving as chief financial officer and COO of Medscape, a leading online Web site for physicians. He was also a vp of business development for ESPN Internet Ventures.
