Greenwich Village Newspaper Publisher Defends N-Word Obama Headline

The article by James Lincoln Collier in the latest edition of 20,000-circulation monthly WestView News is actually pro-Obama. But as New York Post writers Kevin Fasick and Laura Italiano accurately suggest, many readers – especially since the article is not presently online – will never get past the shock of a very debatable headline: “The N***** in the White House”.

From the Post article:

The shocking headline sits at the top of page 15 above an opinion piece that criticizes what it calls the anti-black “racism” of far-right voters…

Columnist Alvin Hall wrote a piece called “This Headline Offends Me,” which ran below Collier’s column. Said one West Villager, Eugene May: “It’s disrespectful in any context to refer to the President of the United States as the N-word.”

In the paper, 86-year-old WestView News publisher George Capsis defends the headline as an agent-provocateur. He writes also that it is designed to jump in where The New York Times, as a rule, does not. The WestView News was launched back in 2003.
