Colin Jost and Michael Che Are Ready for the ‘Recurring Theme’ of Trump

A gift from the comedy gods.

By all rights, the first Weekend Update of each Saturday Night Live season should be stacked. Even more so when you add to a summer’s worth of material and extra long-lead punchline sweetening time a very proximate 2016 Republican presidential candidate.

Ahead of Saturday’s Season 41 debut, co-anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che spoke with TV Guide senior writer Rob Moynihan (the feature will be available starting Wednesday at tvinsider.com). At the risk of being indirectly responsible for an angry @realDonaldTrump tweet at Jost and Che, here is a taste of the Trump portion of the conversation:

Che: The cool thing about Trump is he’s said awful things his entire life, so they don’t even have to do a background search on him. He has a treasure trunk of awful things he’s said, but we’re just pulling out all the stuff he’s saying now.

Jost: He’s said he doesn’t even have an adviser. That’s very clear! [Laughs]

Jost also has a great line about the first Republican debate in August. It involves barbers and bad haircuts.

Further on in the “Anchors Aweigh!” Q&A, Moynihan gets the pair’s thoughts on the first three hosts of the new season – Miley Cyrus, Amy Poehler and Tracy Morgan. The Sept. 28-Oct. 11 issue of TV Guide (pictured) is on newsstands now.
