Fans of The Godfather had a pleasant surprise yesterday when word spread that The Godfather, in all its 2 hour and 57 minute glory was available to watch on YouTube, for free! Alas, less than 24 hours after it appeared, The Godfather was gone or, in other words, it now sleeps with the fishes. What the heck happened? Read on to find out.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Sony Pictures issued the following statement:
“On Wednesday, August 24 reports surfaced alleging that Sony Pictures UK has posted a copy of The Godfather to a YouTube account ‘SonyPicturesUK.’ The YouTube handle in question is, in fact, not a Sony Pictures account and is in violation of Sony Pictures’ rights. Upon discovering the existence of this fraudulent account, Sony Pictures Entertainment worked with YouTube and the account was deactivated. Sony Pictures is investigating the violation.”
So basically, some Godfather fan (or Sony foe) decided to impersonate Sony to share some gangster love with the world. The SonyPicturesUK YouTube account has since been terminated, citing “YouTube’s policy prohibiting content designed to impersonate another person or user,” so the most Godfather you’ll get for free out of the video site for now is the trailer below. You’ll notice from the trailer, by the way, that The Godfather was a Paramount picture, not Sony.
It should be pointed out that The Godfather isn’t available for streaming on Hulu or Netflix either, which is one of the reasons why people were so excited that it was available on YouTube. It’s also why it is such a big disappointment that, in the end, it was taken from us, much like Sonny was taken from the Corleones…
Were you one of the lucky few that got to see The Godfather yesterday on YouTube?
