Village Voice Contract Negotiations Down to the Wire

It started with a June 13 fundraiser, and continued today with a lunchtime staged walkout by employees in front of The Village Voice headquarters. In between, there was a Strike Bulletin featuring a Beyonce GIF (“I Can’t With These Basic Bitches”).

It’s all part of some effective in-their-face media outreach by the Village Voice employees union. The group’s three-year contract expires tomorrow, July 1, and at press time, negotiations with management had resumed.

Today’s brief walkout comes on the heels of another protest held last Thursday in front of the Brooklyn offices of Spanish-language daily El Diario. In that case, members of the Newspaper Guild of New York were objecting to the recent firing of eight El Diario staffers, which they deem illegal.

Update (July 7):
The Voice and union employees were able to come to terms just ahead of the July 4 holiday.
