When users post their birth dates and hometowns, they might not think much of it, but an identity thief sees an opening. An ex-con turned FBI security expert talked with The Guardian recently about how criminals peruse Facebook accounts to steal identities.
Frank Abagnale, whose exploits were actually the subject of the movie Catch Me If You Can, discussed with The Guardian during Advertising Week Europe ways that users can stop sharing information that identity thieves pick up on, such as:
- Don’t post photos of your kids as your profile picture.
- Don’t post your birth date or place of birth.
- Don’t put a frontal profile of yourself on Facebook.
