UT Austin's New Holiday Game: 'Catch an Illegal Immigrant' on Campus

I love being a Texan, and most of what that implies. You know, aside from the bigoted castigation placed upon this state by some of our native dolts. However, when you travel down south to the state capitol of Austin and visit the Survivor Island known as 'The University of Texas at Austin', it is easy to ascertain that the Lone Star state needs to get a ninja star (shuriken, for those not in the martial arts know) hurled into its stereotypical cowboy ass. First reported by the sage minds at the Texas Tribune, the campus group 'Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT)' thought it would be a fun game to play "Catch an Illegal Immigrant" on campus. And the reward for said incarceration? A $25 gift card. Oh yeah, and it gets even awesomer... This was Monday and wouldn't you know it? Public outcry, hate mail (in both English and Espanol) and a deluge of bad press ... and the lunacy has been cancelled. However, does that even matter now? In a statement by YCT Chairman -- get this -- Lorenzo Garcia, he pretty much had to stop the bad PR: Garcia also cited safety concerns, but conceded that the event, where students were to be rewarded with $25 gift cards for "catching" undocumented immigrants, was “over the top.” He nonetheless took issue with the backlash he received on Monday and said he hoped the controversy would stir debate on the issue of immigration. "I have been called an 'Uncle Tom.' I have received emails and comments via social media filled with obscenity," Garcia said in the statement. "The reactions of some who claim that YCT is creating a demeaning or degrading environment on campus have been truly disgraceful." Keeping it real, Lorenzo. Nice. Of course, since Lorenzo and his "clan" (see what I did there) had to take down the party balloons and other red, white and green streamers around campus, he had to one parting shot at the university: "[I] thought [UT Austin] was a place where "students could express their opinions — whether or not they were popular." FWIW, this is the latest controversial move by the organization, which came under fire earlier this year when it held an “affirmative-action bake sale” in which items like brownies were being sold for $2 to white people, $1.50 to Asians, $1 to Latinos, $0.75 to blacks and $0.25 to Native Americans. Yeah, hook'em indeed. And I mean that in the most fierce and savage "Showtime at the Apollo" way possible.
