USA Today Re-Cancels Open Air

USA Today for the second time canceled publication of its lifestyle offshoot Open Air, a quarterly newspaper insert aimed at outdoorsy types, citing the still-weak economy.

Open Air scrapped its fall issue, having already canceled its summer issue back in the spring. It launched in March 2008 with 66 pages, but its spring issue carried just 34.

“A decision regarding the winter issue will be made in July,” said Marcia Bullard, publisher of USA Weekend, which with USA Today publishes Open Air.

Meanwhile, USA Today is moving more aggressively into electronic media. Execs there said the nationwide newspaper Aug. 3 would launch a paid edition available on an e-reader and focus on developing mobile applications.
