Upton to Chair Key Committee
Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.), a moderate Republican, beat out three other contenders to get chairmanship of the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee. The decision by the GOP steering committee is expected to be ratified by the full GOP caucus on Wednesday (Dec. 8).
Upton will select chairmen for the subcommittees that are likely to take up issues such as online privacy (Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection) and net neutrality (Communications, Technology and the Internet).
He won the seat over Joe Barton (Tex.),
