Yoani Sánchez’s publication, 14YMedio.com, is billed as “Cuba’s first independent daily digital news outlet, published directly from the island.” With the recent U.S. embargo lift, there are many additional topics to cover. And this fall, a trip here as well, as Sánchez will be one of seven individuals and two media organizations presented with a University of Missouri medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism.
From a recent 14yMedio blog post:
If you has asked me a year ago what would be the three greatest challenges of my digital newspaper, I would have said repression, lack of connection to the Internet and media professionals being afraid to work on our team. I did not imagine that the another obstacle would become the principal headache of this informative little paper: The lack of transparency in Cuban institutions, which has landed us many times in front of a closed door, and no matter how hard we knocked, no one opened or provided answers.
The other 2015 honorees are: New York Review of Books publisher Rea Hederman; photojournalist Gerd Ludwig; CBS News senior White House correspondent Bill Plante; The Marcus Graham Project co-founder Lincoln Stephens; author Barbara Ehrenreich; copy editor Merrill Perlman; CNN Digital; and the Sports Journalism Institute. The ceremony will take place October 26.
