When the Arab Spring happened earlier this year, did you follow it on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites? You weren’t the only one.
The US Department of Defense is working on plans to use social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter as tools to track rebellions according to a recently released document. The DOD wants to be able to track uprisings as they occur and also be able to identify which ones have true popular support vs the ones fomented by a fringe group. If you have fewer that 10 thousand Facebook friends you need not apply.
Joking aside, the DOD is looking for more than just people. It wants to build whole new systems to identify and track ideas as they spread across the web.It also hopes to one day be able to shape the ideas as they occur.
Do you have what it takes?
