UK Motorist Sentenced in Britain for Fatal SMS Accident

Nothing to joke about here: Cellular News reports that a British motorist who was sending a text message while driving her car has been sentenced to four years in prison after she was involved in a fatal accident—even though the cyclist she hit had ridden through a red light.

The court found that despite the cyclist’s mistake, motorist Kiera Coultas was speeding and not paying sufficient attention to the other road traffic, the article said.

“The serious part of your conduct was that you were sending a text on your mobile phone having just received one,” said Judge Jeremy Burford.
