Visualized: How The World Responded To Typhoon Haiyan On Twitter

When Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines on November 7 it was the strongest tropical storm ever to hit land.

Twitter became the go-to forum for collecting donations en masse, calling for help, locating friends and family members and seeking or providing real-time information about the storm.

Twitter data visualization scientist Nicolas Garcia Belmonte developed an amazing interactive map that shows every geotagged tweet mentioning the word “help” in one of 22 different languages combined with key terms around the disaster.

You can click on any region to see how the message spread virally on Twitter, and zoom in to see actual tweets from notables from that area.

Check out the full interactive map on Github.
