The VMAs are among the most-buzzed about events on Twitter every year. Last year, it was the third most-talked about special TV event, with more than 12.6 million tweets sent.

Fashion designer Jeremy Scott created a colorful redesign of MTV’s iconic moon man, an image that was picked up by Twitter and is available as a hashtag when someone tweets #VMA or #VMAs.

Justin Garrity, president at Postano, talked with SocialTimes about the rise of specialized emojis. After the landmark same-sex marriage ruling, Twitter had specialized hashtags with rainbow flag emojis. Garrity sees this trend growing in the future:

A picture is worth a thousand words. I would say that Emojis are worth at least 100. With mediums like Twitter that limit characters, Emojis take that constraint and introduce a very clever way around it. There is a thrill when being able to use customized emojis. It is like a new word or phrase suddenly is introduced and available. It is fun to try it out. Big events like the VMAs usually have lots of official and unofficial hashtags associated with the event and custom emojis help the brand make one hashtag official while rewarding people for using it. It is a smart use of gamification and fun feedback loop to reward fans for participating.

Twitter also monitored pre-event sentiment to gauge award favorites, such as Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift.

Using Twitter data, here are fan predictions for some of the major awards MTV will give out:
