Too Much Twitter Can Be Bad For Your Marriage, Sex Life, Says Study

Heavy Twitter use can have a negative impact on both your marriage and sex life, says a new study.

The survey, which has been documented in the Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking journal by the University Of Missouri, asked 581 active Twitter users to report how often they used the platform and if any conflicts arose with current or former partners as a result of this usage.

The study found that the more a respondent was active on Twitter, the more likely they were to have experienced a Twitter-related issue with their partner.

Similar results were discovered in a Facebook study undertaken by the University Of Missouri last year.

“Based on the findings from both studies, Twitter and Facebook use can have damaging effects on romantic relationships,” said University of Missouri doctoral researcher Russell Clayton. “That is, when (social networking) use becomes problematic in one’s romantic relationship, risk of negative relationship outcomes may follow.”

“Since much of the social networking research is in its infancy, we do not know if other media, such as Instagram will also impact relationships in a negative way,” said Brenda Wiederhold, the journal’s editor-in-chief.
