Remember all that noise about Donald Trump not taking a single dollar from donors so he wouldn’t be affected or swayed by lobbyists or anyone else?
No SuperPAC. No $1,000-per-plate dinners. No glad-handing with people who don’t care about the process. Bupkis.
That may have been a mastermind idea because a study conducted by The New York Times using mediaQuant and SMG Delta data offers evidence that the American news media has given Trump’s campaign a gift that not even a mother could provide — $2 billion in free media.
It’s a cocktail teeming with vitriol and angst, a splash of non-sequitur logic, and chaser of spray tan. And he is serving to every TV network in the country. Despite what they are saying about him on-air, and behind the scenes, they are guzzling said refreshments like it’s going out of style.

That is more than double what Hillary Clinton is getting, and she is on the precipice of U.S. history as the first female president. And poor Ted Cruz — that’s more than six times what he’s has ever earned.
Donald Trump has spent only $10 million on advertising, which is making him appear to be a very shrewd businessman after all. The most mesmerizing thing is that Trump isn’t just throttling politicians with free media.
Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West received $497 million, $250 million and $234 million in free media, respectively, over the past year. Athletes like recently retired NFL quarterback Peyton Manning and Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry came in with $29 million and $15 million, respectively.
Yep, Trump’s got it made.
