Today’s free eBook download is based on the true story of 32 scouts and their leaders who rode their bikes from Illinois to Florida in the longest bike hike of the scout’s history. Written by Paul Rega, Trail of 32 is the coming of age story by then 14 year old junior scout leader, Rega:
Trail of 32 was a book I started writing with a tape machine in 2000 on the way to a conference in Dallas, Texas. It was raining so hard while driving to the meeting that it brought back memories of the bicycle trip I took to Florida as a Scout in 1972. We all got very wet on that trip! This is a true coming of age story about growing up in in the late 1950’s, 60’s and early 70’s. The book chronicles an amazing feat about thirty-two boys and leaders, who rode their bicycles nearly 1,400 miles from their hometown of Wood Dale, Illinois to Jacksonville, Florida. At 14 years old, I was a junior leader on the trip.
There were no bike helmets at that time. However, we were armed with our new Sears Free Spirit 10-speed bikes, and a unique set of values that we had learned as children. At the time, it was the longest organized bike hike in the history of Scouting. The trip was covered by many TV and radio stations as well as by several newspapers all over the country. The book contains 24 original pictures, many of which I personally took with my trusty Kodak 110 camera.
