Time Apologizes for Suggesting ‘Feminist’ Should be Banned

When Time asked readers to vote on words and/or phrases that should be banned in 2015, we immediately wondered why “feminist” was included. Feminism is a good thing, last time we checked. Making matters worse, “feminist” was leading in Time’s poll. The magazine has now admitted that maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to include the word.

Nancy Gibbs, editor of Time, posted the following apology on Time’s voting page:

Time apologizes for the execution of this poll; the word ‘feminist’ should not have been included in a list of words to ban. While we meant to invite debate about some ways the word was used this year, that nuance was lost, and we regret that its inclusion has become a distraction from the important debate over equality and justice.

The winner — or loser, rather — of Time’s banned word poll will be announced November 19. If it’s not “bae” we call bullshit.
