And the medium, the press release. Solis (D-CA) met with American Ferrera and the cast and crew of "Ugly Betty" and commended the show for its groundbreaking work to remove barriers for Latino actors on prime time television. Solis, a member of the House Telecommunications Subcommittee and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, is an outspoken advocate for increasing diversity in the entertainment industry, both in front of and behind the cameras. In January, Solis spoke on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives to recognize Ferrera and "Ugly Betty" for its Golden Globe wins and for providing a positive portrayal of Latinas on network television. During the meeting with the "Ugly Betty" cast and crew, Solis learned about the ABC's diversity outreach program. "I hope we can work together to teach everyone to appreciate the diversity of our nation," said Solis. "The people we see and hear on television and in movies have great influence on the attitudes of all Americans. "While 40 percent of American youth ages 19 and under are children of color, few of the faces they see on television accurately represent all races or cultural heritages. "Through her work, Ms. Ferrera is breaking down barriers for Latinos in prime-time television. "I commend America and everyone involved in "Ugly Betty" for helping to break down stereotypes and provide a role model for young Latinas.
