The Wall Street Journal Launches German Site

On its journey to leave no market unturned, today, Dow Jones & Company launched  The Wall Street Journal Deutschland, a German-language news site.

“Germany needs to know more about the world and the world needs to be better informed about Germany,” said Robert Thomson, editor-in-chief of Dow Jones & Company and managing editor of The Wall Street Journal. The country is entering a period of unprecedented economic and financial challenges, and its role on the European and world stage will be crucial over the coming years.” joins other regionally focused initiatives in China, Japan, Korea, India, Southeast Asia and Central and Eastern Europe.

“In markets around the world, we see rapidly rising demand for our digital and local news coverage, and we regard Germany as a growth market and the engine of European expansion,” Thomson said. “Given our increasingly successful pay model, we are able to invest in the world’s best and best-informed journalism at a time when many European news organizations are under pressure to cut reporting resources.”

Currently, 30 percent of The Wall Street Journal’s digital audiences comes from outside the North American market. features a mix of free and subscriber-only content from the The Wall Street Journal and across Dow Jones, as well as news and analysis provided by a team of local journalists based in Frankfurt, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Munich.

The site follows a similar layout to  The What’s News column, situated on the homepage, features the day’s most important news stories in business and international affairs.  In addition, the site’s International, Business, Markets, Analysis and Technology sections feature the most relevant content from Dow Jones’ global network. The site also offers market data from German, European, U.s. and Asian markets, selected stories from other German media around the web and from, and a German edition of’s “Most Popular” feature.

Content will be available via the Web site, mobile and tablet applications, and a mobile Web site.

Knut Engelmann has been appointed as managing editor, Germany, for Dow Jones Newswires and The Wall Street Journal Deutschland.  Ralf Drescher, who has worked in a variety roles at German-language newspaper, Handelsblatt, will join as the site’s editor in March.
