Viral Radar: Talking To People On The NYC Subway

Most viral videos are cute, funny or shocking – a laughing baby, a dancing dog, or someone falling on his face. But every once in awhile a video goes viral that does more than make you laugh or cringe – every once in awhile an inspirational video rises the top. Today a moving video called ‘Just Keep Going, You Got Nothing To Lose’ is climbing the YouTube charts with 122,000 views so far. The video consists of interviews with random people on the NYC Subway. They talk about love, fear and the meaning of life.

The video was created by Luke Rudkowski, who you may recognize from another NYC Subway video, ‘Everything is OK on the New York Subway’. Luke starts this video out saying, “Recently I’ve been feeling really depressed and alone” and the New York City subway system doesn’t help that feeling. He points out that over 1.1 million people ride the subway every day and nobody talks to each other, or even makes eye contact. Luke decided to try to change the vibe on the Subway by starting to talk to people.

Luke recorded interviews with a bunch of random people on the subway. He asked them everything from “Why are you here?” to “Which motivates you more – love or fear?” to “What is the meaning of life?” They talk about the government, about what makes them happy and about freedom. They talk about things that people don’t ordinarily take the time to think about on a day-to-day basis, and hearing all of these people talk is beautiful and inspiring.

Luke ends his video with, “I still really don’t know what to think about this project. I don’t know if it was stupid or if it was a waste of time or not. But thinking about it I at least made a small group of people smile. Hopefully I made some of them not feel alone and maybe, just maybe, I made some of them think about life and what makes them happy for the rest of the day.” I certainly don’t think it was a waste of time or stupid. I think it was an inspiration and a success. What do you think about Luke’s project?
