In a statement, Bernard Muir, Director of Athletics at Stanford, said,
“Obviously we’re thrilled to activate @GoStanford as our official Twitter handle and pull off this dynamic trade. From a branding standpoint, this trade makes sense for both schools. We held both accounts – the social media equivalent to having two starting quarterbacks, and we wanted to derive as much value as possible. We expect great things from our new starter, @GoStanford, and wish @SUAthletics good luck in a new home.”
Syracuse has been tweeting from @Cuse, having racked up almost 30,000 followers. But since the school’s official website is SUAthletics.com, it makes sense to align the branding with the Twitter handle, @SUAthletics.
So far, the profile has been wiped clean, rebranded, and has sent one tweet confirming the new ownership of the account.
To complete the trade, Syracuse sent Stanford a delivery of goods including a case of oranges, which Stanford intends to use in refilling its 2011 Orange Bowl trophy.
