NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute has named Susana Ferreira the first recipient of the Matthew Power Literary Reporting Award. Ferreira has reported for Reuters, Time, The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian and more.
The Power Award—a cash gift of $12,500—was created to honor the life and work of Matthew Power, who died in Uganda while working on a piece that required him to walk the Nile river with British explorer Levison Wood. It will be given annually to one young reporter who is researching an important story that highlights the human condition. Ferreira will use the money to research and write an extensive article about drug policy and addiction.
Applications for next year’s Power Award can be submitted starting in November.
