Study: App Downloads Will Spike to 48 billion by 2015

Downloads of mobile apps are expected to skyrocket with more apps hitting the market every day. According to In-Stat, a research firm, the total number of mobile-application downloads is expected to reach nearly 48 billion by 2015. The growing popularity of touchscreen-based smartphones will be the main factor driving the growth in app downloads. By the end of this year approximately 90% of the smartphones will provide touch screens and the number is expected to hit 100% by the end of 2012, according to In-Stat.

The popularity of smart phones and mobile apps are bundled together and with the availability of interesting apps the desire for smartphones is also increasing. In 2010, 23% of the overall phones shipped were smartphone. The smartphones share in the overall market is expected to reach 45% by 2015.

Since the first launch of Apple app store in 2008, Apple users have downloaded more than 14 billion apps. The Apple iOS apps have generated around $2.5 billion for the apps developers. Recently Apple made an announcement that the apps count in their store has crossed 425,000 mark, out which 90,000 apps are specific to iPad.
