From the Post’s announcement:
We’re very pleased to announce that Steve Vogel is moving to the Howard bureau to cover that county and also share responsibility for Metro’s regional military affairs beat.
In Howard, Steve will help cover an expanding, affluent suburban community whose growth is set to accelerate with the movement of military jobs to nearby Fort Meade.
As a subbeat, he will cover regional military news together with Jackie Spinner of the Virginia staff. In that role, Steve returns to a subject in which he has considerable expertise, having covered the local military beat from 1998 until 2004. He will revive his Military Matters column, which runs every other week in the Extras and has proved popular with readers both in print and online.
Steve, who came to The Post in 1995, was a key player in our 9/11 coverage. He worked inside the Pentagon to report on the devastation there and ultimately to provide a compelling narrative of the building’s reconstruction. That work shaped the final chapters of his book, The Pentagon: A History, which is set to be published in June by Random House. For The Post, he was embedded with military units on an aircraft carrier during the war in Afghanistan, and with an Army airborne brigade during the first weeks of the Iraq war. Before joining the staff, he was a stringer in Germany for The Post, Army Times and other publications. He has a masters degree in strategic studies from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. He will start his new assignment on Feb. 26.
