Calling all sports junkies: a new (free!) app called Beyond the Box is the answer to your live sports coverage prayers.
Beyond the Box aggregates NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL news, analysis, rumors, videos, photos, and player thoughts from 1,000 media sources and 2,000 players into a personalized sports timeline that you can curate based on your favorite teams and athletes.
Developed by startup Murphy Avenue, Inc. in Palo Alto, Beyond the Box is basically a sports-exclusive version of Flipboard in the sense that it aggregates customized sources for you in one handy place.
The idea, according to app co-founder Shailo Rao, was to take the legwork (er, thumbwork) out of navigating to 20 different sports sites and apps, bringing all that disparate content straight to you on your device.
It also enables sports enthusiasts to discover fresh content that they might not find if they continued visiting their handful of favorite sites manually.
Turner Sports’ Bleacher Report Team Stream and ESPN’s SportsCenter Feed offer a similar user experience, but Beyond the Box is not restricted by content restrictions or exclusive partnerships.
The gorgeous design and vibrant colors, coupled with the high-quality content, suggest that this is one app all sports lovers should have in their arsenal. (Hint: come fantasy football season, Beyond the Box users will be able to glean key insights from the app’s fantasy sections and instant injury, free agent, and waiver updates. Huzzah!)
Beyond the Box, which was developed as part of Stanford’s StartX accelerator program, is currently only available for iPad and iPad Mini.
