In its headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., Apple is experimenting with wristwatch-like devices made of curved glass, according to people familiar with the company’s explorations, who spoke on the condition that they not be named because they are not allowed to publicly discuss unreleased products. Such a watch would operate on Apple’s iOS platform, two people said, and stand apart from competitors based on the company’s understanding of how such glass can curve around the human body. The Wall Street Journal Capabilities that Apple is exploring for wearable devices remain unclear. But analysts and investors who have been tracking the field predict the company would release a product with many different functions and that the device would work closely with the iPhone. The Verge If Apple does launch an iOS-based watch, it will do so amid increasing competition in the wearable tech market — not only from Pebble, but from Google, as well. A company executive told The Times that Google hopes its Google Glass headset will eventually comprise 3 percent of its revenue by 2015, as the search giant begins its push to make wearable computing mainstream.

The social media sector was up 2 percent last week as LNKD’s fourth-quarter 2012 results dominated with strong numbers across all of its business segments, driving the stock up 21 percent on the week. YELP also performed well after an initial lukewarm reaction to its fourth-quarter numbers, but ZNGA led the sector in weekly performance with a gain of 28 percent, mainly on stronger-than-expected financial results and perhaps the speculation of potential online gambling opportunities in New Jersey (we remain cautious on ZNGA due to its disastrous previous two quarters).

The New York Police Department’s 76th Precinct Captain Jeffrey Schiff had a novel and controversial idea: tweeting pictures of convicted criminals when they were released. The tweets didn’t last long, but two of the career criminals whose photos he shared have already reoffended since the December 2012 tweets were sent.

Venture Capitalists Give Snapchat a $13.5M Poke (CNET)
Snapchat, the social media app designed to let users send pictures and video that self-destruct after a set time — and that seems to have prompted Facebook’s competing Poke app — has raised $13.5 million in venture funding. The New York Times’ Jenna Wortham mentions the cash infusion in an article about the app published Friday evening.
