Facebook Faces More Challenges (AllFacebook) The settlement last August of the class-action lawsuit against Facebook over its use of users’ images in sponsored stories is about to face more opposition. Nonprofit advocacy group Public Citizen said it will file a legal brief with the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, stating that the settlement violates laws in seven states, The New York Times reported. ars technica The settlement would have required Facebook to re-draft its privacy policy, but according to Scott Michelman, an attorney at Public Citizen, and other privacy advocates that are supporting him, it would have made the situation worse. The terms of Facebook's privacy policy would simply be re-written to indicate that all users — adults and teens alike — consent to have their images used in ads when they create a Facebook account. That law says companies need adults' permission before using their names or images in ads. When minors' names or images are used in ads, companies must obtain parental consent. CNET One of the parents appealing the settlement, Margaret Becker of Brooklyn, N.Y., said the most troubling thing is that kids largely don't know the implications of their actions when their online activity is used in advertising. "It really distorts the act of 'liking,' as a child might perceive it," she said.
