Facebook Posts Best Fiscal Quarter, Now Has 819M Mobile Monthly Active Users (AllFacebook) Facebook reached 1.15 billion monthly active users as of June 30, up 21 percent compared with the second quarter of 2012, while daily active users were up 27 percent to 699 million, and mobile monthly active users leaped by 51 percent to 819 million, the company reported as part of its second-quarter financial results. The social network reported 469 million mobile daily active users at the end of the second quarter of 2013. AllThingsD After a very strong Q2 earnings report, investors pushed shares up 17 percent in aftermarket trading. Facebook was trading Wednesday at about $31 a share, nearly as high as it has been all year. That still doesn’t bring it back to the $38 price from its 2012 IPO, but it’s definitely progress. The New York Times The company said it had net income of $333 million, or 13 cents a share. Excluding stock-based compensation expenses, profits were $488 million or 19 cents a share, compared to 12 cents a share in the second quarter a year ago. Revenue soared 53 percent to $1.8 billion. The Wall Street Journal Facebook is getting traction in its quest to become what founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has called a "mobile best" company. Facebook's mobile ad business rose 75 percent from the prior three months, to $656 million in sales, and now makes up 41 percent of its advertising sales. In the first quarter, that percentage was 30 percent. SocialTimes Facebook executives insisted that News Feed ads are working. News Feed ads in particular indicated a ”healthy and growing demand” on the part of the advertisers and “continued user interest,” Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg said, as click-through rates for these advertisements remained strong. USA Today There are still questions about how the company might make money from video ads and search, two areas Facebook is pursuing. Another quarter or two like the second one, and analysts think Facebook might be able to reach the promise investors were hoping for at the time of the IPO. Buffer Takes on HootSuite with New Custom Scheduling Feature (AllTwitter) Buffer, the popular social media optimizing app that lets you easily share content on Twitter (and other social platforms) throughout the day, continues to roll out new updates at an impressive pace. This year we’ve already had native retweeting, Echofon functionality and Buffer business plans, and Wednesday the company unveiled its latest feature: custom scheduling. The Next Web Buffer queues posts and status updates for pre-set, equally spaced intervals throughout the week. The intervals themselves can be changed from the dashboard, but it’s rather difficult to set a specific time and date for individual posts. GigaOM Users will now have the ability to schedule tweets for a very specific time, not just a general window of time. This sounds like a small feature that wouldn’t represent a big shift for the company, but it’s a feature that big social media management platforms like Hootsuite and Tweetdeck count as key. Google Gives $600K to Bring Free Wi-Fi to 31 San Francisco Parks (VentureBeat) If you’ve ever wanted more incentive to work outdoors in San Francisco, today is your kind of day. Google has donated $600,000 to the city to turn on free Wi-Fi in 31 public parks. Chipotle Stages Bogus Twitter Hack for Promotional Campaign (CNET) When fast food chain Chipotle sent out a series of confusing and nonsensical tweets Sunday, it was clear the company's Twitter account had been hacked. In fact, the chain even sent out a final tweet at the end of the day saying, "Sorry all. We had a little problem with our account. But everything is back on track now!" However, it seemed strange when no hackers stepped forward to claim responsibility for working to topple the restaurant's Twitter feed.
