Josh Friedland from The Food Section alerted me to the lamps above right, from West Elm, noting that they bear a striking resemblance to the Verner Panton Fun Lamp from my item earlier this week about the decor at Aquavit.
The West Elm lamps are $95, which is way more affordable than the $750 you’d be set back by acquiring the vintage Panton one. Too bad the West Elm ones are so damn ugly, and make the Panton ones look worse by association.
My friends and I were discussing a similiar phenomena the other evening, with regard to Noguchi Lamps. The look of them has been so exploited by cheap disposable furniture outlets like Urban Outfitters and Pier One. The average person has no idea that Noguchi was the originator of the design.
